Arrow Trekking and Safaris – Conquer Africa’s most iconic peaks with expertly crafted mountain adventures.
Embark on an unforgettable 8-day adventure to Margherita Peak (5,109m), the highest summit of the Rwenzori Mountains and the third-highest peak in Africa. This challenging yet rewarding trek takes you through diverse ecosystems, from tropical rainforests to alpine glaciers. You will traverse lush valleys, boggy wetlands, rocky ridges, and glaciated peaks, offering some of the most breathtaking views in East Africa.
Guided by experienced mountaineers, this trek is perfect for adventurous hikers and experienced trekkers looking to challenge themselves in one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.
Upon arrival in Kasese, you will be welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel near Rwenzori Mountains National Park. In the evening, you will meet your trekking guide for a detailed pre-trek briefing, where you will go over the itinerary, safety precautions, and equipment checklist.
The trek begins at the Rwenzori National Park headquarters in Nyakalengija (1,650m), where you will complete the park registration and meet your guides and porters. From here, you will start the climb through the dense Afro-montane rainforest, following the Mubuku River. The trail is steep and muddy in some sections but offers a chance to spot blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and Rwenzori turacos.
After crossing the Mahoma River, the climb becomes steeper as you ascend towards Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m), your first overnight stop. From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the Portal Peaks and the deep Mubuku Valley below.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the mountains, transitioning from rainforest to bamboo forests and heather zones. After an early breakfast, you will descend briefly to the Kichuchu Bridge, crossing the Mubuku River before a steep climb through giant heather and moss-draped trees.
The trail includes rocky and boggy sections, with occasional wooden boardwalks. Look out for three-horned chameleons and the endemic Rwenzori red duiker. By late afternoon, you will arrive at John Matte Hut (3,505m), located near the stunning Bigo Bog and Bujuku River.
Today’s hike involves crossing the famous Bigo Bog, a wetland that requires careful navigation over wooden planks and muddy trails. The bog is home to the iconic giant lobelias and groundsel trees, found only in high-altitude African mountains.
As you ascend towards Bujuku Hut (3,962m), the valley opens up, revealing dramatic views of Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and Margherita Peak in the distance. The hut is located near Lake Bujuku, a glacial lake at the base of these towering peaks.
The trail becomes steeper as you climb towards the high alpine zone. You will pass through Scott-Elliot Pass (4,372m), which offers panoramic views of the Rwenzori ranges. Vegetation thins out, and the landscape turns rocky and rugged.
After a final steep ascent, you will arrive at Elena Hut (4,541m), the last camp before your summit attempt. This is the coldest night of the trek, and the hut is surrounded by glacier-covered peaks and sharp ridges.
Your summit push starts at 2:00 AM with headlamps lighting the way. The climb involves steep rock scrambling, crossing the Margherita Glacier using crampons and ice axes, and navigating crevasses. The final ascent to the summit involves rope-assisted climbing on icy ridges.
Reaching Margherita Peak (5,109m) at sunrise offers breathtaking views over the Congo Basin and the Rwenzori ranges. After taking summit photos, you will descend back to Elena Hut, then continue down to Kitandara Hut (4,023m), passing through stunning glacial lakes.
The day begins with a scenic trek along the shores of the Kitandara Lakes, offering breathtaking reflections of the surrounding peaks. A short but steep ascent leads to Freshfield Pass (4,282m), where you can admire stunning views of Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. This section is characterized by alpine meadows with unique vegetation such as giant lobelias and groundsel trees.
Descending from Freshfield Pass, the trail becomes steeper, winding through rocky outcrops and heather forests. You will navigate through the Lower Bujuku Valley, a landscape filled with moss-covered trees and small streams. The final stretch follows the Mubuku River, passing waterfalls and steep cliffs before reaching Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m), a peaceful resting spot surrounded by lush vegetation.
The descent continues through steep and rocky ridges, offering spectacular views of the Rwenzori ranges. As you make your way down, the trail passes through dense bamboo forests, which gradually transition into the lush montane rainforest. The path can be muddy and slippery, requiring careful footing, especially during the rainy season. Along the way, you will pass rushing waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and hanging vines, creating a mystical atmosphere. This region is home to various wildlife, including colobus monkeys and Rwenzori turacos. The day ends at Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m), where you can enjoy the final night in the Rwenzori wilderness.
The final descent takes you through the thick rainforest, where you may spot blue monkeys, chameleons, and colorful bird species. The trail winds down along the Mubuku River, offering picturesque views of cascading streams and towering trees. As you approach Nyakalengija (1,650m), the temperature rises, and the vegetation becomes denser with large ferns and tropical plants. Upon arrival at the park headquarters, trekkers receive their summit certificates, marking the successful completion of the expedition. After a well-deserved rest, you will transfer back to Kasese, reflecting on the incredible journey through the "Mountains of the Moon."
The Rwenzori Mountains are Africa’s third-highest mountain range, after Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike volcanic mountains, the Rwenzori range is formed by uplifted rock masses and is known for its permanent glaciers and snow-capped peaks, despite being near the equator. The park boasts diverse ecosystems, including tropical rainforests, alpine meadows, and high-altitude glaciers, making it one of the most scenically stunning and ecologically rich mountain ranges in the world.
Yes, a trekking permit is required for all visitors entering Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The permit fees vary depending on the length of the trek and the route chosen. Permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or registered tour operators.

We were assisted by Isaack throughout our whole stay in Tanzania. He arranged our safari, Mt. Kilimanjaro hike, accommodation, and transport. Everything went very smooth and Isaack was always available when we had questions, we could count on him when needed. Furthermore, his English is very good and he handles in a transparent way. Overall, we had a very positive experience and would definitely recommend Arrow trekking for people looking to visit Tanzania!Posted on Miria vVerified Incredible 4-Day Camping Safari The 4-day camping safari was truly incredible! It was full of adventure from start to finish—sleeping under the stars, waking up to the sounds of the wild, connecting with the other people in the same safari and exploring breathtaking landscapes. Our guide was fantastic, and we saw SO much wildlife; the Big Five but also much more! The only downside was that the itinerary and campsite were different from what I had originally agreed on, and I only found out at the start of the safari. Still, the experience itself was so great that it didn’t take away from the trip at all.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a raw, exciting, and unforgettable safari adventure!Posted on Clement DVerified Great ascent! Thanks for the trip of a lifetime Arrow Trekking & Safaris driver, we met in Arusha and took off, traveling to Tarangire NP, Lake Eyasi, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Meru, and Lake Natron before flying to Zanzibar. We experienced how the Hadzabe tribes live while on a day-long culture tour near Lake Eyasi; the highlights for that day included my sister getting "married" to a Hanzabe tribesman and our failure at using a bow. I was even able to buy one of the Hadzabe instruments with the help of Alex, our local guide. Also, according to Mr lsaack, we were super lucky, as we were witness to both a leopard eating in a tree and a lion using our vehicle as shade while traveling through the Serengeti. The time we spent in Tanzania was off-the-charts amazing and heaping in culture. Arrow Trekking $ Safaris is full of friendly staff, who are willing to work with budgetary restraints and add customizable additions to trips. My family and I highly recommend! Thanks for the trip of a lifetimePosted on Prajwal GVerified Amazing safari day was great Arrow Trekking & Safaris had offered plenty of activities during our trip in Tanzania such as an hot air balloon ride, visit to the local Masai village and of course the brilliant safari. Honestly, if you are debating on whether to come here, don’t and just come here. I cannot recommend this company enough.Posted on Imre BakkerVerified That was very incredible! We traveled to the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar, all of which had the most incredible accommodations. We learned a great deal from this adventure. Which accommodation should we select? Which is the best option as they are all so different from one another? What time of day would be best to go? How many nights should we spend in each location? When planning an amazing safari, the little things matter most: travel dates, packing lists, bush aircraft, and distances. We heartily recommend Arrow Trekking and Safaris.
