Arrow Trekking and Safaris – Discover Africa’s top safari destinations with expertly crafted itineraries.
Arusha National Park is a stunning yet often overlooked gem in northern Tanzania. Located just a short drive from Arusha city, this park is one of the most accessible safari destinations in Tanzania, offering a diverse range of landscapes, wildlife, and activities. Despite its small size (137 km²), the park boasts lush rainforests, open savannahs, alkaline lakes, and the towering Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak.
Unlike other Tanzanian parks famous for large predators, Arusha National Park is more renowned for its scenic beauty, rich birdlife, and diverse ecosystems. It’s an excellent destination for walking safaris, canoeing, and climbing Mount Meru, making it a great alternative or addition to the larger national parks.
Arusha National Park offers diverse landscapes, including the Ngurdoto Crater, Momella Lakes, and Mount Meru (4,566m). The park features lush rainforests, open savannas, and alkaline lakes, making it a scenic and wildlife-rich destination. Visitors can enjoy canoeing, trekking, and walking safaris while spotting unique habitats and breathtaking views.
The park is home to Tanzania’s largest giraffe population, along with buffaloes, zebras, colobus monkeys, and hippos. Though lions are absent, leopards and hyenas are occasionally seen. With over 400 bird species, including flamingos and fish eagles, it is a top spot for birdwatching.
Arusha National Park is a small but ecologically diverse park located in northern Tanzania, covering 137 km². It sits between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Great Rift Valley, with elevations ranging from 1,500m to 4,566m at the summit of Mount Meru. This varied terrain creates a mix of landscapes, from lush rainforests and volcanic craters to open savannas and alkaline lakes.
Arusha National Park has a moderate, temperate climate due to its elevation (1,500m–4,566m), making it cooler and greener than many other Tanzanian parks. Temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C (50°F–77°F), with cooler nights and warmer daytime temperatures. The park experiences two dry seasons and two rainy seasons throughout the year.
This is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around permanent water sources, making them easier to spot. The dry conditions result in clear skies and shorter grass, providing excellent visibility for game drives and walking safaris. Mount Meru trekking is also ideal during this period due to minimal rainfall and cool, pleasant weather. However, this is also peak tourist season, meaning more visitors and higher accommodation prices.
This period brings short rains, creating lush landscapes and vibrant birdlife, making it an excellent time for birdwatching and photography. In the Momella Lakes area, flamingos and other water birds thrive. This is also the calving season for various herbivores, attracting predators and providing exciting wildlife encounters. While occasional rains occur, they rarely disrupt safaris, making it a great time for those who enjoy scenic beauty and fewer crowds.
This is the wettest season, transforming the park into a verdant paradise with blooming flowers and abundant birdlife. While some roads may become muddy, this period offers a peaceful safari experience with fewer tourists and discounted accommodation rates. The misty forests and crater landscapes create a magical, otherworldly atmosphere, perfect for those who appreciate solitude and dramatic scenery.
Arusha National Park offers scenic game drives through its diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to open savannas and volcanic craters. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. While the park lacks large predators like lions, lucky visitors may encounter leopards and hyenas in the dense forested areas. The Ngurdoto Crater and Momella Lakes provide excellent game-viewing opportunities, making game drives an exciting way to explore the park.
For adventure seekers, trekking Mount Meru (4,566m) is a must-do experience. This second-highest mountain in Tanzania provides a challenging but rewarding climb, offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. The trek passes through dense rainforests, alpine meadows, and rocky peaks, with chances to see monkeys, buffaloes, and even elephants along the way. Unlike Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is less crowded, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a scenic and quieter trekking experience.
For a more immersive experience, walking safaris allow visitors to explore the park on foot, accompanied by an armed ranger. This provides a closer connection to nature, offering opportunities to observe smaller details like tracks, insects, and unique plant species. Walking through the montane rainforest and open savanna, visitors may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and various bird species, making it a thrilling and educational adventure.
A unique activity in Arusha National Park is canoeing on Momella Lakes, one of the few places in Tanzania where visitors can enjoy a water-based safari. As you paddle across the calm, alkaline lakes, you can spot hippos, flamingos, pelicans, and other water birds, all while surrounded by stunning views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. Canoeing offers a peaceful and intimate wildlife experience, perfect for birdwatchers and photographers.

There are lodges, tented camps, and budget accommodations in and around the park. Many visitors also stay in Arusha city, which offers a wide range of hotels.

We were assisted by Isaack throughout our whole stay in Tanzania. He arranged our safari, Mt. Kilimanjaro hike, accommodation, and transport. Everything went very smooth and Isaack was always available when we had questions, we could count on him when needed. Furthermore, his English is very good and he handles in a transparent way. Overall, we had a very positive experience and would definitely recommend Arrow trekking for people looking to visit Tanzania!Posted on Miria vVerified Incredible 4-Day Camping Safari The 4-day camping safari was truly incredible! It was full of adventure from start to finish—sleeping under the stars, waking up to the sounds of the wild, connecting with the other people in the same safari and exploring breathtaking landscapes. Our guide was fantastic, and we saw SO much wildlife; the Big Five but also much more! The only downside was that the itinerary and campsite were different from what I had originally agreed on, and I only found out at the start of the safari. Still, the experience itself was so great that it didn’t take away from the trip at all.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a raw, exciting, and unforgettable safari adventure!Posted on Clement DVerified Great ascent! Thanks for the trip of a lifetime Arrow Trekking & Safaris driver, we met in Arusha and took off, traveling to Tarangire NP, Lake Eyasi, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Meru, and Lake Natron before flying to Zanzibar. We experienced how the Hadzabe tribes live while on a day-long culture tour near Lake Eyasi; the highlights for that day included my sister getting "married" to a Hanzabe tribesman and our failure at using a bow. I was even able to buy one of the Hadzabe instruments with the help of Alex, our local guide. Also, according to Mr lsaack, we were super lucky, as we were witness to both a leopard eating in a tree and a lion using our vehicle as shade while traveling through the Serengeti. The time we spent in Tanzania was off-the-charts amazing and heaping in culture. Arrow Trekking $ Safaris is full of friendly staff, who are willing to work with budgetary restraints and add customizable additions to trips. My family and I highly recommend! Thanks for the trip of a lifetimePosted on Prajwal GVerified Amazing safari day was great Arrow Trekking & Safaris had offered plenty of activities during our trip in Tanzania such as an hot air balloon ride, visit to the local Masai village and of course the brilliant safari. Honestly, if you are debating on whether to come here, don’t and just come here. I cannot recommend this company enough.Posted on Imre BakkerVerified That was very incredible! We traveled to the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar, all of which had the most incredible accommodations. We learned a great deal from this adventure. Which accommodation should we select? Which is the best option as they are all so different from one another? What time of day would be best to go? How many nights should we spend in each location? When planning an amazing safari, the little things matter most: travel dates, packing lists, bush aircraft, and distances. We heartily recommend Arrow Trekking and Safaris.
