Arrow Trekking and Safaris – Discover Africa’s top safari destinations with expertly crafted itineraries.

Trip Overview

Embark on an unforgettable Mkomazi National Park day trip, a hidden gem in northern Tanzania known for its stunning landscapes, rare wildlife, and conservation efforts. Nestled at the foot of the Usambara and Pare Mountains, Mkomazi offers breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, open savannahs, and acacia woodlands. Unlike Tanzania’s more famous parks, Mkomazi is a quiet, off-the-beaten-path destination where you can enjoy an intimate safari experience while spotting elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and the critically endangered black rhino and African wild dog.

Itineray

Your journey begins with an early morning pickup from Arusha or Moshi, followed by a scenic 3-4 hour drive to Mkomazi National Park. Along the way, enjoy views of rural Tanzania, Maasai villages, and the towering peaks of Kilimanjaro and the Pare Mountains. Upon arrival at the park gate, your guide will provide a briefing on the park’s history, wildlife, and conservation efforts before starting the safari.

Morning: Game Drive & Wildlife Viewing

  • Main Activities: Game drive, wildlife spotting, photography
  • Meals Provided: Picnic lunch

Your morning game drive will take you through the vast grasslands, thorny bushveld, and acacia woodlands that make up Mkomazi’s unique ecosystem. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, oryx, elands, hartebeests, and warthogs. Lucky visitors may spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, and jackals roaming the savannah.

Mkomazi is also one of the few places in Tanzania where you can see the endangered African wild dog and black rhino, thanks to conservation efforts led by the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary. Your guide will share insights into these programs and the importance of protecting these species.

Midday: Picnic Lunch in the Wild

At midday, enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated rest area inside the park, surrounded by nature. Take in the tranquil atmosphere while spotting birds and smaller animals that roam nearby.

Afternoon: Rhino Sanctuary Visit & More Game Viewing

After lunch, visit the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary, where black rhinos are bred and protected before being reintroduced into the wild. Learn about the challenges of rhino conservation, anti-poaching efforts, and the park’s role in saving this critically endangered species.

Continue your afternoon game drive, exploring different areas of the park and searching for any animals you may have missed earlier in the day. As the sun begins to set, exit the park and start your journey back to Moshi or Arusha, arriving in the evening.
