Arrow Trekking and Safaris – Your gateway to unforgettable adventures in East Africa, from thrilling safaris to epic mountain treks!
Rwanda, a small but breathtakingly beautiful country in East Africa, is renowned for its rolling hills, rich biodiversity, and deep cultural heritage. Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” Rwanda offers travelers an unparalleled mix of adventure, wildlife encounters, and cultural immersion. Despite its tragic past, Rwanda has transformed into one of Africa’s safest and most progressive nations, with clean cities, efficient infrastructure, and a strong commitment to conservation and sustainability.
Rwanda is a top destination for wildlife enthusiasts, offering some of the best primate trekking experiences in the world. Volcanoes National Park is world-famous for mountain gorilla trekking, where visitors can observe these endangered primates up close in their natural habitat. Nyungwe Forest National Park is home to chimpanzees and other primates, while Akagera National Park boasts a classic Big Five safari experience with lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffalo.
Rwanda is a year-round destination, but the best time for wildlife viewing and trekking is during the dry seasons:
The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and excellent birdwatching, but trekking trails can be muddy.
For the best experience, visit June–September for safaris and trekking, while the green seasons offer scenic beauty and budget-friendly travel.
One of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in the world, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park offers visitors the chance to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The trek takes adventurers through lush bamboo forests and steep volcanic slopes, guided by expert trackers who follow the trails of gorilla families. Once the gorillas are found, visitors have a magical hour to observe them up close, watching their interactions, playful behaviors, and family bonds. Due to conservation efforts, gorilla trekking permits are limited, making early booking essential. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is both humbling and exhilarating, as it provides a rare glimpse into the lives of these gentle giants while supporting conservation efforts.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park and the perfect destination for a traditional African safari. It is home to the Big Five—lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes—along with giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and hippos. The park’s diverse landscape, consisting of rolling grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands, creates stunning scenery for wildlife viewing. Game drives in Akagera take visitors across vast plains where predators and prey interact in their natural environment. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema provide a unique perspective, allowing travelers to see crocodiles basking in the sun and large pods of hippos floating in the water. Whether on an early morning drive or a night safari, Akagera offers unforgettable encounters with Rwanda’s rich biodiversity.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s most biologically diverse rainforests and a prime destination for primate lovers. The park is home to over 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and golden monkeys. Chimpanzee trekking begins at dawn, as visitors follow expert guides deep into the dense jungle to track these intelligent primates. Once found, the chimpanzees display fascinating behaviors, swinging through the trees, calling out to one another, and interacting within their social groups. Nyungwe also offers the famous Canopy Walkway, a suspended bridge that provides breathtaking views of the rainforest from above. For nature enthusiasts, the park’s hiking trails, waterfalls, and birdwatching opportunities make it a must-visit destination.
Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, is a vibrant city that blends modernity with deep historical and cultural significance. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a powerful place of remembrance that educates visitors about the tragic events of 1994 while highlighting Rwanda’s remarkable journey toward reconciliation and peace. Beyond its history, Kigali offers lively markets such as Kimironko Market, where travelers can explore traditional crafts, fabrics, and local cuisine. Art lovers can visit the Inema Arts Center, a creative hub showcasing contemporary Rwandan art through paintings, sculptures, and performances. With its clean streets, friendly atmosphere, and stunning cityscapes, Kigali provides a captivating introduction to Rwanda’s culture and progress.
Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, is the perfect destination for relaxation and water-based activities. Its serene shoreline is dotted with charming lakeside towns such as Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu, each offering unique experiences. Unlike many African lakes, Lake Kivu is free from dangerous wildlife, making it safe for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Boat trips across the lake allow visitors to explore hidden islands, such as Napoleon Island, home to thousands of fruit bats. Sunset cruises offer breathtaking views of the water reflecting the colors of the sky. Whether enjoying fresh seafood at a lakeside restaurant or unwinding at a luxury resort, Lake Kivu provides the perfect setting for relaxation after an adventurous safari or trekking experience.
Most travelers require a visa to enter Rwanda. However, Rwanda offers a visa-on-arrival policy for all nationalities, allowing visitors to obtain a visa at the airport or border entry points. The East Africa Tourist Visa is also available, granting access to Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya with a single visa. Travelers are advised to check the latest visa requirements before departure.
The best time to visit Rwanda is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. These months offer the best conditions for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris, as the trails are drier and easier to navigate. However, Rwanda is a year-round destination, and even during the rainy seasons, the landscapes remain lush and beautiful.
Rwanda is considered one of the safest countries in Africa. Kigali, the capital city, is known for its cleanliness and low crime rate. The government places a strong emphasis on security and tourism safety. Visitors should still take standard precautions, such as safeguarding valuables and following local guidelines during their stay.
The official currency of Rwanda is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). However, US dollars are widely accepted, especially in hotels, lodges, and tourist attractions. Credit and debit cards can be used in major cities, but carrying some local currency is recommended for small purchases and transactions in rural areas.
Packing essentials for Rwanda depend on the activities planned. For gorilla trekking, bring waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, gloves, long-sleeved clothing, and insect repellent. Lightweight clothing is recommended for city visits, while warm layers are useful for cooler high-altitude regions. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are also recommended for protection against the sun.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Other recommended vaccines include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and routine immunizations. Malaria prevention is advised, as Rwanda is a malaria-endemic country. Travelers should consult their doctor before the trip.
Yes, Rwanda is well-connected to neighboring Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. The East Africa Tourist Visa allows seamless travel between Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. Many travelers combine gorilla trekking in Rwanda with safaris in Uganda or the Serengeti in Tanzania. Direct flights and overland border crossings make multi-country itineraries easy.

EXCELLENT Based on 27 reviews Posted on Tripadvisor Vanessa Bélanger-RichardVerified Superbe équipe! Posted on Tripadvisor MargotVerified Kili & Safari I had an incredible experience with Arrow Trekking & Safaris. I climbed Kilimanjaro in 7 days via the Machame Route and then did 4 days of safari — everything was perfectly organized. During the Kilimanjaro climb, the whole crew- 19 people (Juma, Sebastian, Gabriel, Laurent, Goodluck, Steven, Jackson, Moses, Charles, Robert, Enock, Kasim, Anton, Julius, Jason, Samson, Derick, Kaifa and Rashidi) was essential. You simply cannot do it without them. They were professional, supportive, and amazing throughout. The food was always delicious, even at altitude! The safari was just as perfect — fantastic guide and cook, great organization, and we were lucky enough to see the Big Five in just four days. A big thank you to Isaack for handling all the arrangements, transfers, and hotels, and for always being available to answer my questions. Local agencies deserve more credit — you can book with Arrow Trekking & Safaris with your eyes closed. Asante sana!Posted on Tripadvisor Teresa VVerified Great experience!!! Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with Arrow Trekking was an amazing experience. Isaack was a fantastic host, always attentive and professional. The guides were excellent, supportive and very knowledgeable throughout the trek. The food prepared by Laurence was absolutely delicious, far better than expected on the mountain. I highly recommend Arrow Trekking to anyone looking for a well-organized, safe and unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience!!!Posted on Tripadvisor EstherVerified A once-in-a-lifetime experience I’ll never forget! Arrow Trekking was recommended to me by a friend who climbed Kilimanjaro a few years ago — and she was absolutely right! Isaak is an amazing host: incredibly dedicated, always available, and everything was perfectly organized. The 7-day trek was an unforgettable experience. Every day we arrived to perfectly set-up tents, and the food… truly next level. It’s unbelievable how they managed to pull this off time and time again, right in the middle of nature! A huge thank you to Isaak and the entire team of guides (shoutout to Issa!) and porters who made this trip so special. A once-in-a-lifetime experience I’ll never forget!Posted on Tripadvisor Fabian VVerified Arrow trekking - Safari + Kilimanjaro hike Arrow trekking is a highly professional agency where client is king. We were assisted by Isaack throughout our whole stay in Tanzania. He arranged our safari, Mt. Kilimanjaro hike, accommodation, and transport. Everything went very smooth and Isaack was always available when we had questions, we could count on him when needed. Furthermore, his English is very good and he handles in a transparent way. Overall, we had a very positive experience and would definitely recommend Arrow trekking for people looking to visit Tanzania!Posted on Tripadvisor Miria vVerified Incredible 4-Day Camping Safari The 4-day camping safari was truly incredible! It was full of adventure from start to finish—sleeping under the stars, waking up to the sounds of the wild, connecting with the other people in the same safari and exploring breathtaking landscapes. Our guide was fantastic, and we saw SO much wildlife; the Big Five but also much more! The only downside was that the itinerary and campsite were different from what I had originally agreed on, and I only found out at the start of the safari. Still, the experience itself was so great that it didn’t take away from the trip at all. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a raw, exciting, and unforgettable safari adventure!Posted on Tripadvisor Clement DVerified Ascension formidable ! Great food, camping gear, and people!Posted on Tripadvisor Vittal MVerified My family and I highly recommend! Thanks for the trip of a lifetime Arrow Trekking & Safaris driver, we met in Arusha and took off, traveling to Tarangire NP, Lake Eyasi, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Meru, and Lake Natron before flying to Zanzibar. We experienced how the Hadzabe tribes live while on a day-long culture tour near Lake Eyasi; the highlights for that day included my sister getting "married" to a Hanzabe tribesman and our failure at using a bow. I was even able to buy one of the Hadzabe instruments with the help of Alex, our local guide. Also, according to Mr lsaack, we were super lucky, as we were witness to both a leopard eating in a tree and a lion using our vehicle as shade while traveling through the Serengeti. The time we spent in Tanzania was off-the-charts amazing and heaping in culture. Arrow Trekking $ Safaris is full of friendly staff, who are willing to work with budgetary restraints and add customizable additions to trips. My family and I highly recommend! Thanks for the trip of a lifetime
